Many people asked us the question: how did the awareness start? As you probably know, me and ROQQY are surfers, and we love the big waves. But a couple of years ago we discovered that on many of the beaches we go surfing we can only surf on waves of plastic instead of water. It’s soo depressing to sit on your board waiting for a wave and scoop all kinds of bottles, bags, and cups away from your surroundings.
But it got worse when FOXXY and LOTTY arranged some diving school lessons, and the visitors were shocked to see more plastic floating than fish under the waterline. After looking online to see if more beaches had the same problem, they noticed it was a global issue.
And not only the beaches, rivers and forests got more and more filled with plastic waste. The OQQIES have seen this before in the deep ocean where they lived. After evolving, they thought it would be over once on land, but the piles of plastic waste rose to a dangerous level. Sea Turtles get strangled in plastic beercan-holders, crabs eat the small plastic residue and get eaten by other fish, and that comes back into our food chain.
So, to change the mindset of mankind, the OQQIES came together again and decided to use the portal to go back in time in order to warn mankind before this happened. But the portal malfunctioned, and they seem to end somewhere in space…?
Well, that’s probably another story to tell later. Meanwhile, let’s stick to the current situation and ensure we do something about this single-use plastic and the huge piles of plastic waste. Let’s collect, recycle, create new things out of it, and be more aware of where you dump the trash. Every wave starts with a little movement!
